NMC chosen for 2 key projects in Sheffield

Civil engineering and specialist contractor North Midland Construction PLC (NMC) has been awarded two contracts worth over £2.5m by Sheffield City Council to carry out various highways and pathway improvements in different parts of the city.

The first project will see NMC carrying out enhancements to an area at the northern tip of Sheaf Valley on the edge of the city centre to make it more accessible for pedestrians, cyclists and disabled people.

Called the Clay Wood and Park Hill Green Links project, the aim is to create a continuous open space starting from the junction of Norwich Street and South Street across the open hillside to Shrewsbury Road and up through Claywood to Fitzwalter Road.

There is currently a route for pedestrians and cyclists running from Park Hill flats across Shrewsbury Road to Fitzwalter Road via Clay Wood and the Cholera monument. NMC are carrying out improvements to this. They are responsible for ground shaping work, the construction of retention structures, laying tarmac footpaths and the fabrication and installation of street furniture to make the area more welcoming and to turn it into a place that the whole community can use and enjoy.

Work on the project has just begun and is expected to be completed by August 2014.

The second contract NMC has been awarded is for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) North Tinsley Link Road project and is to carry out improvements to the main carriageway, bus lanes, pedestrian crossings, signage, signalling, drainage and street lighting.

The work involves the widening of Attercliffe Common to provide bus priority traffic signals, a controlled pedestrian crossing and a bus lay-by as well as improvements to signing, lighting and carriage resurfacing.
In addition a bus priority scheme will be introduced at the junction of Attercliffe Road and Carbrook Street. New traffic signals, cycle facilities and lighting will be installed at the junction.

Priorities will also be changed at the Carbrook Street and Dunlop Street junction to facilitate the BRT bus route. The existing carriageway will be widened and super-elevated too and improvements will be made to street lighting too.

Furthermore new traffic signals will be installed on Weedon Street at its junction with Dunlop Street and Meadowhall Drive. There will also be a new carriageway, and footway as well as improvements to surface water drainage and street lighting.

NMC will be making changes to the junction of Meadowhall Drive and Meadow Hall Way, again to facilitate the BRT bus route.

Work has already begun, with the project expected to reach completion by July 2015.

“We are delighted to have secured these two important projects in Sheffield, providing us with another great opportunity to work with Sheffield City Council,” said Geoff Poyzer, managing director of North Midland’s Highways & Utilities division. “We look forward to developing our relationship with the council, and will ensure that we retain our high environmental standards when completing the jobs.”
