110-year-old Sutton firm acquired by another Midlands firm

A fourth generation firm of Chartered Accountants in Sutton Coldfield has been acquired by another family-owned business with its roots in the region.

The long-established Griffith & Griffith in Gate Lane, Boldmere, has become the tenth Midlands office of the fast expanding Baldwins accountancy group and the 17th acquisition in total.

All staff at the 110-year-old firm have been retained by Baldwins whilst the insolvency side of the practice will continue to be run by George Griffith as George H W Griffith Limited.

George, who is retiring from the general practice after joining Griffith & Griffith 37 years ago, said the company had been founded by his great-grandfather Captain George Griffith in 1903.

“There is a proud tradition in our family of naming descendants George after my great-grandfather, who was always known affectionately as the Captain, and we have all run the company,” he said.

“The Captain expanded the company with his son, George H W Griffiths, who was Lord Mayor of Birmingham from 1953-54, and my father became managing partner in 1960 before I joined the practice in 1977.

“I am pleased Baldwins has acquired the business because there are many similarities between the companies as we are both family orientated and have an identical ethos to business.

“Baldwins has expanded beyond belief and I know my clients, many of whom have become friends over the years, are in good hands for all their accountancy needs and will receive up-to-date and pro-active advice.

“Although I am retiring as managing director from the accountancy side, I will remain as a consultant initially and I will continue to lead the insolvency practice on a part-time basis. I am delighted to be working alongside Richard Clayton, partner at Baldwins, who will lead the office moving forwards.”

Richard said: “Baldwins is a long-established family business itself and we have a similar ethos to client service as Griffith & Griffith so this is a natural fit.

“We are focused on a similar market of dealing with clients in this part of Birmingham predominantly owner managed, family businesses and charities.

“Our clients benefit from a broad range of in-house services and expertise as well as having access to a wider range of services that as a larger company we can provide.”
